All steel components galvanized at Kingfield comply with AS/NZS4680 and undergo rigorous 10-point quality testing before delivery to our customers. Our galvanizing bath is 12.8 metres long, 1.6 metres wide and 3.5 metres deep. Kingfield has a full service offer for all galvanizing requirements; this includes multiple dips for large scale structural components and centrifuge galvanizing (“spinning”) for bolts, brackets and small components.
Uniformly galvanized steel components are the product of design and fabrication working with the galvanizing process. Adopting the prescribed design practices will deliver the optimal quality of galvanizing coating, reduce galvanizing cost and ensure the safety of our galvanizing personnel.
Large components may be processed with double-end or double-depth dipping. The item is lowered into the bath, dipping half the length or depth. When this is zinc coated, it’s raised from the bath and turned to dip the remaining section. This may cause a visible “join line”, refer Double Dipping Chart.
Large scale structures produced in modular components for construction onsite can simplify handling and transport. Modular design techniques may also produce cost benefits in manufacturing and assembly. However, when cutting or welding after galvanizing follow the Thermal Cutting instruction to ensure the corrosion protection for these areas is equivalent to that provide by HDG.
Fabrication may require additional holes for hanging, venting and draining. Imagine immersing the steel structure into a large tank of water. It needs to submerge without trapping any air inside. Then as the structure emerges, all water must completing drain out. This is required for hot dip galvanizing; all steel components must have openings to prevent air pockets and all full draining.
Correct venting ensures the internal surface of steel components are completely galvanized for full envelope, corrosion protection. It also ensures that lighter items do not float in the zinc bath due to trapped air pockets.
Closed vessels that are not to be galvanized inside, i.e. types of heat exchangers, must be fabricated with snorkel-type vent pipes. These must be long enough to project above the level of pickling, fluxing and galvanizing baths when the vessel is fully immersed. Our quality systems inspect all steel components prior to galvanizing to ensure compliance with venting and draining requirements, for the highest quality galvanizing outcomes. Following the hot dip galvanizing process, our team conducts an industry-leading 30 point HDG thickness quality test on each component and a visual inspection of each galvanized item prior to dispatch, to ensure Kingfield’s quality standards are met.
